Superman & Lois follows Clark Kent and Lois Lane as they navigate the challenges of balancing their heroic duties and high-profile careers with the demands of raising their two teenage sons. Set in the small town of Smallville, the series explores the pressures of family life, personal sacrifices, and the enduring strength of love and hope in the face of extraordinary challenges.
As a lifelong fan of the characters, this project was one most near and dear to my heart. I created over 1,600 temp VFX shots over the first three seasons of the show as the in-house VFX artist. The work ran the entire gamut of every type of effect: digi-doubles, various super powers (heat vision, cold breath, super speed, x-ray vision, etc), set extensions, CG environments, cloth/smoke/physics simulations, the list goes on. This project was also my first time using Unreal Engine to create shots, but as usual I utilized Adobe After Effects and Cinema 4D (Octane Render) as the primary apps.
My work developing and iterating the look of so much of the visuals would go on to directly inform the final versions by VFX vendors (some I also took to final myself), many of which would come straight from my original temp project files. I also spent time developing some main title designs for the show as well. I used every trick and technique I knew, developed several new skills, and it’s impossible to attempt to showcase all the work that went into this project over the four years I worked on the show.
Main Titles
Collaborating with director/producer Lee Toland Krieger and composer Dan Romer, I was tasked with creating some concepts for potential main titles that could help set the show apart. When runtime became a concern for the episodes, the idea was ultimately nixed to allow the episodes to really fill their time. It was truly a great joy exploring ideas to quickly tell this story of Lois and Clark’s transition from the big city of Metropolis to putting down roots in the simpler world Clark once knew.
