An action comedy romance thriller about a young guy falling in love with a Chinatown shop owner, only to realize he’s in way over his head after her ex-boyfriend comes to collect his debt.

My primary role on the project was as sound editor/designer, and composer. As is often the case when I am also composer, I like to work sound design into the music and vice versa, creating a unique and unified soundscape where everything blends seamlessly. I was also colorist and VFX artist, creating a filmic look to give it a less digital feeling overall.

The score was inspired by the sounds of many different cultures, combining the sonic power of Bollywood action films, traditional Thai instruments, and the music of Ennio Morricone. Creating a diverse sound that represented not just the world the story plays out in, but also the cast and crew who made it, just made sense.

We searched for a song that perfectly fit the beginning of the film that had an 80s vibe but also spoke to the story itself somewhat, and when nothing worked I proposed making an original song myself. After creating a quick demo in 30 minutes, the director knew it was the way to go and the song “You Don’t Know” was born. While I have not released the song yet as a single, you can hear a slightly extended version of it over on the music page. Please check out the whole short on Youtube to see and hear all the excellent work!

Stills

Some shots I felt really show off the color on this film quite well

Teaser Designs

I designed the logo to have the look and feel of some of my favorite anime titles, relying strongly on bright crimson negative space and a negative image of the machete, going for a 70s cinema style.
