Based on the DC Comics series, Dead Boy Detectives follows the adventures of two boys who, after their untimely deaths, choose to investigate supernatural mysteries instead of passing into the afterlife. The pilot combines elements of ghostly horror, spellcasting, and magical realism to craft a unique and immersive world.
As the sole visual effects artist for the pilot, I worked closely with editor Brian Wessel and director Lee Toland Krieger to conceptualize and bring to life the magical world of the Dead Boy Detectives. Much of my work centered on supernatural effects, including the boys' ghostly appearances, demonic possessions, various magical eye effects (e.g., cat eyes, fortune-telling eyes, and portal summoning), and intricate spellcasting visuals. Additionally, I developed main title ideas, which evolved into unique chapter titles integrated into the narrative.
My work relied heavily on After Effects, Mocha, and EmberGen for a few real-time simulations. I was also responsible for developing the main title and chapter titles for the pilot, which led to the creation of numerous original hand-drawn sketches by me in the style of the main character’s notebook.
