At its core In The Black ™ is an intense multiplayer team-based online space combat simulator with a laser-like focus on the combat and a serious respect for science. This earned the Atomic Rocket's Seal of Approval.

The Impeller Studios team is led by industry veterans Jack Mamais (MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries, Far Cry, and Crysis) and David Wessman (the X-Wing / TIE Fighter series, Blood Wake, and Saints Row).

Over the course of several months, I created several HUD/UI concepts for menus, elements, in-game assets, as well as redesigning the logo. The team was committed to providing players the utmost control and information over their character’s progression, ship configurations, customization, and parts inventory, so the largest challenge with designing it all was working out the most user friendly paths of navigating it all. As much as possible, things were kept neatly designed along a grid system, and maintaining thoughtful use of color to only draw the eye to areas requiring pilots’ attention at critical times. This was the first time I’d ever worked on a video game, and it was a thrill to take on the challenge of designing things that were aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional and simple to navigate.
